앵무새 죽이기-To Kill a Mockingbird

축구부 생활관. 나 홀로 남아 책을 읽는다.

Harper Lee의 <To Kill a Mockingbird>.

강북문화정보도서관에서 빌려온 책이라 부지런히 읽는다.

산 책보다는 빌린 책 완독률이 확실히 높다.

2014년 5월 1일 완독한다. 부지런히 읽으니 자잘한 글씨의 323쪽짜리 원서 완독하는 데 나흘 쯤 걸렸다.

 

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

 

Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

 

1930년대 알라바마주, 억울하게 추행범으로 몰린 흑인 청년을 변호하는 백인 변호사의 이야기, 그 이야기를 아직 열 살이 안 된 소녀가 독자에게 들려주는 이야기이다.

가끔 속어나 아이들이 쓰는 영어, 알라바마의 영어가 튀어나와 원서 있는 속도를 줄어야 했다.

모르고 그냥 넘어갔을 경우 흐름이 끊기는 수가 있으니......

지난 해 우연히 EBS에서 그레고리 펙 주연의 1962년작 <앵무새 죽이기>를 본 것은 큰 도움이 되었다.

 

인간에 대한 차별없는 애정을 느낄 수 있는 소설이다.

한 소녀의 정신적 성장이 담긴 bildungsroman이기도 하고.

 

영어 공부 삼아 읽었는데 뜻밖에 감동을 받았다.

 

읽다가 기억해 두어야 할 단어를 여기 살짝 정리해둔다.

단어 보다는 문장 구사에 더 신경써서 읽어야 할 소설이었지만......
